Piracy and insecurity in the Gulf of Guinea: Challenges and issues of regional maritime governance

The rise of piracy in the Gulf of Guinea is a challenge for the economy of the coastal states that rely on ports activities and oil export. The Gulf of Guinea is also a region of growing importance for the oil importing foreign powers for which this region has become strategic. The weakness of the means of monitoring and delays of a regional action strategy still prevent the emergence of true maritime governance in the sub-region.
