Defence and European Integration

Currency and defence are the Nation States’ main fields of action. Launching the Euro was a major step forward in the European integration process, but the lack of common economic policy hindered this one. What about the European defence then?

GRIP does not analyse this subject only from a purely technical and capability angle. It also tries to link it to a political project, all too often overlooked, which integration is supposed to embody.  Setting up the euro has reminded us that if we put something in common, we need to properly integrate the policies aiming at supervising it. European defence is no exception to the rule. As a matter of fact, is it really possible to create common military capabilities without also creating “common political capabilities”? Errare humanum est, perseverare diabolicum.
