Baseline Study of the Fight Against the Illicit Accumulation and Trafficking of Firearms in Africa

The Regional Centre on Small Arms (RECSA) selected the consortium of GRIP and the Small Arms Survey (SAS) to conduct a baseline study of African countries’ fight against the illicit accumulation and trafficking of firearms. The aims of this study were, amongst others:

  • identify and evaluate the level to which African states, (sub-) regional organisations and regional organisations of heads of police have implemented international and regional commitments;
  • evaluate national and regional capacities to combat the proliferation of small arms;
  • analyse the impact of these initiatives; and
  • identify challenges and best practices at national and regional levels

RECSA was established in 2005 to coordinate the fight against the proliferation of small arms in the Horn of Africa and the Great Lakes region. Its Secretariat is in Nairobi, Kenya.
